Welcome to places of power

The nations of Asteria are at war. The vast and powerful armies of Murdas march upon their neighbours, guided by the indomitable will of Emperor Valexandre, and the world is forced to choose sides. Armies will be shattered, cities will burn, nations will fall, and you are stuck in the middle. Life is tough, and the world unforgiving. What are you willing to do to survive another day?

After four years of working on this project in private, the time has finally come when we feel ready to start sharing our baby with the wider world. So allow me to introduce you to Places of Power, a TTRPG set in a grim-dark, low fantasy world, that currently finds itself in the midst of a rising global conflict. In this game you do not play as the hero, nor are you setting out on an epic quest to bring the war to an end and restore peace to the world. Instead, you play as a survivor, a regular person caught up in events so much bigger than you are, and who is just trying to make it to the end of each day alive, no matter what it takes to do so. What this means in practice can vary widely. You could be a merchant or sailor who finds themselves smuggling much needed food into a besieged city. Maybe you are scholar or doctor who is suddenly caught up in a growing rebellion. Perhaps you are a thief or a prisoner, given a job you cannot refuse. Success might mean the start of a new life, whilst failure will almost certainly lead to your death. This is a game of ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances, of desperate situations and morally complex choices, of sudden violence and lingering consequences.

Places of Power is heavily inspired by the events of the Napoleonic Wars that saw large parts of early 19th century Europe thrown into chaos. As you play out your individual stories, the world around you will change in response to the escalating war. Rationing might go into effect as food supplies start to run low. NPCs you have come to rely on might be drafted into the army and sent away to fight. The town you live it might find itself being used as a billet by an allied army, or under siege by an invading one. You might be forced to flee to hills as the city you call home is burnt to the ground. And all the while you still have to find a way to get enough food to make it through the day.

Right now the first draft of Places of Power is complete, and we are working on refining and playtesting to make sure everything works the way we have envisioned. Once that is complete we plan on launching a Kickstarter campaign so that people can play the game for themselves. But we don't want to leave things there. We really want this world we are building to feel alive, and that means things can't remain static. That is where this website comes in. Once the core rules have been released, we want to continue to develop supplementary maps, lore, characters, encounters, and even entire campaigns, all of which we plan to make available to you completely for free. You will be able to take these resources and drop them into your own games, to help fill gaps, create side quests, or simply flesh out some archaic piece of lore. If you are willing to invest in our game, then we want to make sure you get the best value for your money that we can provide.

So please, sign up to our mailing list to be kept up to date on the games development, and to be notified when the Kickstarter campaign begins. We have had a great time developing this game, and we believe you will have just as much fun playing it.
